Caring For Your wood

Please reach us at woodandwaxprojects@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

You can choose to cut on any board but remember, just like other wooden treasure, it WILL scratch.  To avoid this you could cut on one side of your board and serve on the other; this way no one sees the scratches.

As always woods gets dry with use and water exposure. The quickest and easiest way to protect your wood is to soak it in Mineral oil overnight. Butcher Block conditioner or Walrus oil are also easy to use and completely food safe. If you have a larger piece that is too hard to soak, then simply wipe it generously, let it soak in overnight and wipe it in the morning. Follow the directions on the bottle to know how much to use. Lastly, we recommend Odie's Oil for a longer lasting finish. Odie's Oil is an amazing food grade oil that hardens for a beautiful and durable finish.  It's a bit thicker and harder to spread but the end result will not disappoint.

You will want to use non woven white applicators pads to apply the products. Amazon sells them in bundles at a very reasonable price. Cut a small square of the pad for each application. Give the oil time to absorb into the wood. Add more product if it is absorbing quickly. The thicker the product, the more you will need to work the product in. When ready, use a piece of an old towel to wipe off the board. Be sure to wipe it until if feels dry, smooth and not tacky in any spots.

24 hours! It is best to give your wood a day to set before you start using it again.

Wood that has been dried and finished properly is still "moving". For that reason it is important to finish both sides of your piece to insure the wood does not warp or crack due to dryness on one side.

Resin (also called epoxy) is a glass like surface that will scratch like glass. That is why you should only serve on a tray made with resin. However, if it gets scratched, it can be sanded and repolished to restore it to it's original beauty. Feel free to reach out to us if you would like your tray sanded and polished for a nominal fee.
